TWO TO GO
LO5 were sent in at Gaza and a fast start was made by Jenke with 35. Hyams and Barker then combined for a 78 run partnership putting pressure on the opposition putting OC into a position of strength. Barker contributed 35 while Hyams anchored the innings with 58. Late hitting from Syed (26) got the total up to an extremely competitive 181. A fast start for Gaza had them 2/98 in the 17th before Janetzki took the wicket of the key batsmen launching a comeback. With the ball it was Westbrook leading the way with 3/28, in tandem with the economical Syed. Unfortunately some strong hitting from Gaza got them over the line in a close game. An extremely gallant and inspiring performance from the boys off the back of a difficult week.

At Concordia, late week rain had made curation difficult, so although 8 overs were bowled on Saturday, it soon became clear that the pitch was unsuitable for finals cricket and as such play was abandoned for the day.

Returning on Sunday for a 50 over game, Old Concordians won the toss and sent Golden Grove in, given the 10:30AM start meant there would be some early juice in the wicket. And didn’t the bowlers take advantage of the conditions, with Strelan again getting a wicket in the first over! From there, Rehman, Spencer and Oliver continued the tight lines against some blasé Brumbies batting, finding edges and dislodging bails at regular intervals as the visitors were dismissed for 39 in 26 overs.

If there were any doubts about the pitch, they were quickly dispelled by Oliver and Kupke, who chased down the total in 9 overs to book our spot in the grand final.

The feel good story was with LO6 with an amazing second innings comeback. In a low scoring game it was valuable contributions from our batsmen that set a platform for a bowlers. Jolly with 30 led the way while teen scores from Naeem, Junior Mirza and Junior Livingston put a score of 109 on the board. Potentially not enough, but in a finals game, it gave us a chance.

CORKINDALE, OLIVER, PEDERSON IN THE RUNS
On a warm autumnal day, B3s had been set 233 against the 2nd team on the ladder to keep their undefeated streak intact. A couple of early wickets gave Reynella hope, but the old guard of Jonathon “THE Jono” Oliver and Najam steadied the ship before tea was taken at 3/128. Oliver continued the assault after the interval, finishing on a well constructed 130 as he was well caught on the boundary, before Pederson and Casey saw the side to a 6 wicket victory.

After being dismissed for 259, we bowled 12 overs to stumps, highlighted by Henry Beazley’s first A grade wicket for the club as he skittled Reynella’s opening batsman for a pair, and Eamon’s first ever OC wicket with a diving caught and bowled.

Winning the toss and bowling, LO5 got off to a strong start with Janetzki rolling through the top order with 2 wickets. He was able to combine with Syed who took 4 through the middle, plus 2 each to Rehman and Mattner, while 4 Hyams gully catches ensured the total was restricted to just 126. A shaky start early with the bat was resurrected with a clutch Barker (41) and Parkinson (23) partnership. From joining at 4-35, the two put on an 80-run stand under pressure to get the score to 5/105 before 2 Rehman cuts through point sealed the match and most likely a finals birth for LO5.

Club icon Corkindale led the way to help LO6 set the side to a match winning total. Coming in at three the keeper/batter put an a 69 run partnership with Haider (38) for the 2nd wicket. Maxy pushed on and posted an anchoring 70 with late hitting from Naeem (28) once again getting us to an excellent first innings score of 186. With the ball it was Van Haren doing the damage, taking 4/22 of his 9 leading the side to a win which will essentially seal a top 4 birth for LO6 too.

From there, the middle order dug in with some judicious batting, taking the score to 3/89 at tea, courtesy of metronomic bowling from Oliver, Beazley and Spencer.

As the pitch flattened after tea, more aggressive batting and some missed catches helped Reynella amass 233 from their 80 overs but post tea was highlighted by a sliding catch at long on from Strelan in front of a strong Concordia crowd. A good challenge for our batsmen next weekend whom have rarely been tested this season.

LO5 being set into bat set up the innings well in the first 20, with Syed pushing his way to 57 before drinks teaming up with Ghai (31) laying the foundation to accelerate. Unfortunately a collapse after drinks led to an all out score of 137, with albeit some uneven bounce. In reply the Alligators chased down the total easily with aggressive batting but missed chances did prove costly. Only highlighted by an unlikely ‘no look’ runout from Westbrook via an incoming throw from Syed.

Fielding first in LO6 it was spin weapon Paasuke taking the first 3 wickets with figures of 3/21 of 9 including a stumping in partnership with Corkindale. Economical bowling from the attack meant 153 was needed to win but it was really only Naeem (46) that showed us resistance as we fell to a 37 run loss.

JOLLY’S HEROICS & BJ GOES BANG WITH ANOTHER TON
Having already claimed first innings points, B3 was looking to bat all day in the 39C weather, but plans quickly went awry with three dismissals. A stabilising partnership between Harris (37) and Pederson arrested the slide, before Spencer came in as he and the skipper put on 85 for the 8th wicket to take the innings past tea. Bjorn was the last wicket to fall, having finished on 155, which gave us 32 overs to chase the unexpected outright.

Same as last week, it was Strelan and Spencer who got the wickets tally ticking over. Ben was very economical (3/4 off 9) while Sam was unplayable at times, swinging the ball both ways and leaving batsmen shaking their heads as they trudged off. In the end, we fell one wicket short of the outright due to some stoic tail end Trinity batting.

The win leaves us four games clear on top of the ladder with 2 games to go, guaranteeing (hopefully 2) home finals and elevation into B2 next year.

An opening stand of 44 between Hyams and Ghai put us in the box seat early but regular wickets falling after swung the momentum PAOCs way. To rebuild the innings it was Askar with 36 as the run chase got tight. 9 wickets down Jolly and Carter needed 13 of the last over. With 4 needed of the last ball Jolly pierced the outfielders at mid wicket and gave OC the win as he finished 27* with 5 boundaries. A crucial win which could help to seal a finals birth for LO5.

LO6 with the bat first unfortunately couldn’t quite get the total they needed. Corkindale (30) and Ali (30*) stabilised the innings through the middle but late hitting was needed which Farhan delivered. 50 of 35 with 4 sixes helped OC to 3/151. In reply Reynella proved to be too strong as they made the total inside 30 overs 3 wickets down.

But after that the foot hit the accelerator as Farhan blasted a 19 ball 50 as he scored 78 off just 31 with 7 sixes in that! He was very well assisted by Junaid (44 at a run a ball) and Corkindale (45*) leading to an excellent score of 5/214. An excellent bowling performance backed up the batting with spinner Paasuke being the star again with 3/12 helping the side to bowl Glenunga out for 105. A great win for LO6 and one that will help towards the finals chase!

In the very first over, bowling downwind Strelan bounced out the Trinity opener, to a fine catch by Spencer at fine leg. Benjamin then proceeded to dismiss the other opener next over, to be 2/3. From then on, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as Trinity were dismissed just after tea for 105, with both opening bowlers finishing with 4 dismissals, and Najam with 3 catches.

Small totals can be hard to chase, and at 2/32 with dynamic Oliver back in the shed, there were a few concerns in the changeroom. Fortunately, Pederson and Hassan combined for an unbeaten 107 run partnership to see the side to a first innings win with 80 overs to bat next week.

A lighting fast outfield got them away to a 91 run partnership before the first wicket fell. 3 wickets from Janetzki was able to pull the batters back to an extent but 233 was still able to be posted. A good start to the run chase from Hyams (22) and Jenke (46) gave OC hope as good running between the wickets got us off well. Unfortunately wickets probably fell too often through the middle, although shining star Max Parkinson put on a run a ball 39 with a great display of driving and cutting to hold the middle together. MONTY’S FIRST TON FOR OC
B3 Chasing 211 at Park 15 was definitely a doable task on a friendly deck. Monty joined Oliver at the crease early as the pair put on 117. Oliver played his usual style as he raced to 88. Monty and Najam then together put on 122 as the pair transcended past the total before tea. Najam was dismissed for a blazing 77 while Monty then takes over the show and makes a chance-less hundred with a brilliant display of patient batting plus pouncing when he needed to as well. Monty was dismissed for 129 while Raschella hit late with 48* to get the total past 400.

In LO5 skipper Pincin decided to bat first but unfortunately the Pincin formula was proven to be the successful route for victory as only Hitesh (48) troubled the scorers. Bowled out for 101 the bowlers went to work and got the game tight. Leading the attack was Strelan (4/21) helping to reduce the score to 9/101. Unfortunately the winning runs were hit in a nervous chase showing more runs were needed to defend the small total.

LO6 batted first on a scorcher and fell to 4/52 but a clutch partnership of 77 from Junaid (51) and Farhan (50) steadied the ship and allowed dangerous dasher Junior Mirza to come in late and whack a season high 59. 7/229 was posted at an impressive rate of 5.7 and would always prove to be a tough total after the fielding sight sweltering in the heat for 40 overs. A shared effort with the ball including 2 wickets to Shayan, Sarfaraz and Ajay, plus Phil Paasuke taking his first wicket for the club in inexpensive figures of 1/11 from 5 meant the total was defended as Mawson lakes were bowled out for 140.

The Pincin Formula returned in LO5 this week as the skipper decided to send the visitors Gepps Cross in. A steady start was made with the bat until MOTM Askar tore the game open with 4/31 and helpful economical bowling from E Livingston and Van Haren kept the total to 9/153. In response a steady partnership from Jenke (22) and Ghai (24) got us off to a good start before Askar and Barker came in to do the bulk of the work. Askar scoring 72* with 9 fours and 1 six with Barks assisting with 35 saw us home pushing LO5 to equal top.

After 4 successful tosses to start the year, Pederson has fallen to 4 tosses loss in his last 4 as B3 were made to bowl first. On a flat pitch the bowlers were made to work early as only 1 wicket fell before tea. A great hundred from the PAOC opener anchored their innings but our economical lines held things up at other ends. 4/16 from 17 from Oliver headlined the day as PAOC set 8/210.

After 4 successful tosses to start the year, Pederson has fallen to 4 tosses loss in his last 4 as B3 were made to bowl first. On a flat pitch the bowlers were made to work early as only 1 wicket fell before tea. A great hundred from the PAOC opener anchored their innings but our economical lines held things up at other ends. 4/16 from 17 from Oliver headlined the day as PAOC set 8/210.

B3s SECURE FINALS SPOT

On a glorious Australia Day long weekend Saturday, the B3s outlasted a dour Marion to claim a 77 run victory. Although the Rams were never really in the hunt, wickets were hard to come by on a flat deck as the required run rate slowly climbed over the afternoon. All bowlers toiled hard, but it was B3 debutant Janetzki who troubled the batsmen the most, finishing with 5/28 and booking the team some late March action.

The LO6s started well against Flinders Uni away, with Babar promoted to opener and repaying the captain’s trust well with 33. A typical Oliver start was met when the bowlers took to the crease as he blasted his way to 77 with 14 boundaries. Before tea he was joined by Pederson at the crease who took his time to play himself in but post tea went bang ❗️ scoring half of the teams total as he hit 19 fours and 7 sixes posting a nearly run a ball 148 in his 8th club ton as a good day 1 total was secured finishing on 9/305 with some late hitting from Janetzki.

The Pincin formula was back again in LO5, losing the toss but bowling first is what the captain ordered as again his attack got stuck into a 2nd placed Gaza as Van Haren took 4/16 while economical bowling from the pace contingency restricted them to 129. From there it was coach Janaway who made the small total chase look easy as he raced to 73* ably assisted by Barker (27*) in a 102 run stand.

After last time LO6 coming out with a tie against Flinders Park the combo of Schmidt and Azam taking the new ball proved strong again as both took 3 wickets. The bowling cartel kept the scorers quiet with tight lines led to the total to being restricted to just 99. The innings included a contender for catch of the season from Schmidt at short cover diving horizontally to his left with a reaction time of practically zero will be one to be heard for years to come. A run chase guided my Captain Ali (26*) saw LO6 make the total 7 down as the push for finals continues.

3 WINS TO START OFF 25
Having finished 2024 with some outright-inspired momentum, B3 was keen to get 2025 off in similar vein in Najam Hassan’s 100th game for the club with an away win against Woodville Sth. Being sent into the field, our bowlers performed outstandingly on a lovely pitch, albeit with some very close LBW shouts being turned down, to restrict the total to 140 from 40 overs. Special mentions to fill-in keeper Jake Harris with 4 catches, Oliver with 3/17 off 9 and Casey with a spectacular one-handed catch.

So far this year, the B3s have not had to chase very much, so although the total was small, it had to be respected. Respect was indeed shown, with senior players Oliver (55), Hassan (60*) and Pederson (50) picking off the loose balls to post a 6 wicket victory against a spirited Woodville South attack.

Another toss won by Pincin saw LO5 bowling again first, and it was that man Mattner in his first game for the season picking up 4/32 including the wicket of TikTok star Jim Brady. Once again a sensational effort from the attack restricted Athelstone to 114 all out inside 30 overs. Opening the batting, Jenke dominated his home ground, blasting his way to 65, and only just falling agonisingly short of red ink. The total being chased down in 21 overs sees OC placed well at the top.

LO6 travelled to Brighton to start the new year. Fill in captain Schmidt lost the toss and we took to the field after welcoming new player Phil Paasuke to the club! We bowled and fielded well and despite one batsman who made 64 we offered an excellent display to restrict Brighton to 8 for 157 after 40 overs on a small oval. Babar bowled well to take 4 for 45 off 8 and he was well backed up by Sarfaraz who collected 2 for 25. Other bowlers - Sutts, Ajay and first gamer Phil bowled well. A special thanks to Junior Mirza who filled in and kept for the full forty overs - lucky we were able to borrow some keeping pads.

Santa’s helpers were bearing gifts for B3 at Concordia on Saturday as Hassan brought up his 50 in just the second over of the day. Hassan was joined at the crease by Kupke as Hassan pushed on with a cover driving display showing his excellence of timing and picking gaps between fielders. Hassan brought up his century through cover making it back to back tons and a record 9 for the club as he made 117. In tandem with Kupke (74*) the pair put on 103, as Kuppas was then joined at the crease by Strelan (41) as the 2 pushed on to get the score up to 336 as OC were bowled with 24 overs left to bowl.

Rehman took the new ball and much like the week before, taking a second 5 wicket haul for the match, dismissing the top 5 Uni batsmen. A sharp catch from Strelan at square leg got things underway starting a mini collapse. A runout from Oliver, 2 wickets from Livingston and a Casey bowled had Uni 9 down. In the 23rd over Strelan from the northern end hit the batsmen on the pad with a yorker and sealed the outright win for OC.

Much like weeks before LO5 lost the toss and were sent in to bowl. The consistent bowling attack like weeks before took over straight away with economical bowling and a share of wickets with 2 each to Westbrook, Donlan and Raschella returning from a thumb fracture. 9/139 was set for the OC batsmen. Coming in at 3 and 4 Pincin and Barker put together a 91 run partnership as the President Pincin blasted his way to 41 looking straight often while the boundary hitting Barker with 8 fours and 54* saw the innings home with Parkinson as the total was chased 3 down.

LO6 had a road trip out east to finish 24 against Flinders Park. Skipper Corkindale won the toss and elected to bat first as early wickets was loss before duo Schmidt (23) and Naeem (37) were able to stabilise the innings and increase the run rate. Nomi Mirza was able to dominate the 2nd half of the batting innings with a run a ball 44* as OC posted 8/150.

Ziggy with 4 bowleds and an LBW led him to his 12th 5 wicket haul for the club finishing with 5/13 off 10 zinging the bails often while batsmen tried to leave balls. Along with this Ziggy’s 4th picking up his 300th club wicket. Restricting Uni to 9/66 a few late runs led to them being all out for 95 just before tea.

After tea a partnership of 66 from Ford (24) and Hassan currently on 48* led to OC passing the score 2 wickets down. Finishing the day at 4/118, Pederson and Hassan will look to push on strong next week.

Both B3 and LO6 are at home and have top 2 clashes, while the LO5s head across Grand Junction Road in a 2v3 battle. Your support would be greatly appreciated, so get Christmas shopping done in the morning and then head out for an afternoon of absorbing cricket!

LAST MATCH BEFORE TEST MATCH BREAK
Defending 273 on the last day of spring in the top of the table clash, the B3s got off to the perfect start claiming 2 wickets in the first over against Hope Valley. Some expansive shot making, combined with a plethora of dropped chances, had the game slipping away from the Old Concordians at 2/128 off 26 overs, before Man of the Match Hassan claimed the Hornets skipper caught and bowled to break the game open. From there, while the opening batsman fruitlessly batted for his 100, Rehman consistently hit the stumps at the other end to rout the tail, and record an 113 run victory in a fitting tribute to Tim Kupke’s 200th game for the club.

Some batting practice in dead time then realised some valuable performance points to extend the B3s lead at the top of the ladder.

The LO5s travelled into the foothills to take on perennial foe Old Ignatians, and amassed 188 from their 40 overs. Making a welcome return to the club, Joe Hill opened the batting with 30, while club stalwart Barker held the innings together with 67*.

Consisting of some ex-Glenunga alumni, Old Iggies were never troubled in the chase, as their first wicket partnership of 133 made light work of the target in 33 overs.

The LO6s enjoyed a rare game at Concordia College, taking on Hectorville, albeit with only 10 players. Winning the toss and batting first, the ever consistent Shayan and Farhan batted well, but it was the veteran Corkindale who thwarted the Gators bowlers, with the total finishing on 157 after 40 overs.

Early wickets had Hectorville in trouble at 3/13, before the middle order steadied the innings. With no DRS available, some contentious decisions assisted the batsmen to unfortunately chase down the total with 4 wickets in hand.

4/4 tosses won for captain Pederson meant B3 would bat first for the fourth successive game. Oliver (41) and Hyams (22) got the scorers working early with the score at 0/56 after 8 overs before both fell. From there Pederson joined Hassan at the crease, combining to take down the Hope Valley attack as they posted a 133 run partnership. To bring up the 100 run stand, Pederson pulled over mid wicket to bring up his runs record milestone as he passed Ev Krieg with applause from the crowd as he moved to 5,692 before being dismissed for 62. Hassan pushed on playing shots on both sides of the field as wickets fell around him and he brought up his 8th hundred for the club pushing OCs score to 273 as he finished with 129.

Finally winning a toss, captain Pincin decided to continue what’s been working for LO5 and sent Ingle Farm in. A great decision as the bowling attack got to work like weeks before. Keeping the scoring tight and picking up wickets at regular intervals. Janetzki, Khan, Van Haren each picking up 2fa’s while a combination of 7 bowlers used all kept the scoring rate down. Bowling them out for 68, rain did halt play through tea but a clearing of the sky meant Jenke was able to get out to the middle much like the week before, scoring 38 with Ghai (21*) at the other end to propel OC to victory.

LO6 fielded first at Schmidt Oval and Para Hills got away to a strong start, only being resisted by Anush Haider (3/26). Unfortunately the Bureau was right in their weather forecast prediction and meant play was stopped in 37th over and wasn’t resumed.

4/4 tosses won for captain Pederson meant B3 would bat first for the fourth successive game. Oliver (41) and Hyams (22) got the scorers working early with the score at 0/56 after 8 overs before both fell. From there Pederson joined Hassan at the crease, combining to take down the Hope Valley attack as they posted a 133 run partnership. To bring up the 100 run stand, Pederson pulled over mid wicket to bring up his runs record milestone as he passed Ev Krieg with applause from the crowd as he moved to 5,692 before being dismissed for 62. Hassan pushed on playing shots on both sides of the field as wickets fell around him and he brought up his 8th hundred for the club pushing OCs score to 273 as he finished with 129.

Finally winning a toss, captain Pincin decided to continue what’s been working for LO5 and sent Ingle Farm in. A great decision as the bowling attack got to work like weeks before. Keeping the scoring tight and picking up wickets at regular intervals. Janetzki, Khan, Van Haren each picking up 2fa’s while a combination of 7 bowlers used all kept the scoring rate down. Bowling them out for 68, rain did halt play through tea but a clearing of the sky meant Jenke was able to get out to the middle much like the week before, scoring 38 with Ghai (21*) at the other end to propel OC to victory.

LO6 fielded first at Schmidt Oval and Para Hills got away to a strong start, only being resisted by Anush Haider (3/26). Unfortunately the Bureau was right in their weather forecast prediction and meant play was stopped in 37th over and wasn’t resumed.

Current Old Concordians captain Bjorn Pederson became the club record holder yesterday for most runs scored in the club’s history moving to 5,692, surpassing Ev Krieg’s total of 5,683.

Bj made a vintage 62 against Hope Valley in tandem with Najam Hassan (129) and brought up the milestone with a forward pull shot over mid wicket which fittingly brought up the record and the 100 run partnership between the pair.
